ABOUT
Mulligans Direct Cremation
Mulligans Direct Cremation provides simple, dignified direct cremation services for families across Greater Manchester and Stockport, as well as the wider North West.
We are part of Mulligans Funeral & Monumental Services Ltd, a family-run funeral business established in 1996, trusted by families for nearly 30 years.
A family business, built on care
Mulligans was founded by the late Brian Mulligan, who believed funeral care should be honest, personal, and free from pressure. After many years working within a large corporate funeral provider, Brian opened the first Mulligans funeral home in Clayton, Manchester, to offer families a more compassionate and human approach.
Those values continue to guide how we provide direct cremation today — with clarity, dignity, and genuine care.
Experience you can trust.
Today, Mulligans is led by Karen Mulligan-Cowan, Brian’s daughter, who has grown up within funeral service and brings decades of practical experience to her role.
Together with a small, experienced team, Karen ensures every direct cremation is carried out with care, discretion, and clear communication — from the moment your loved one comes into our care through to the return of ashes.
What direct cremation means
Direct cremation is a simple cremation without an attended funeral service. Many families choose this option for its simplicity, flexibility, and affordability.
At Mulligans, we believe simple does not mean impersonal. Every person entrusted to our care is treated with the same dignity and respect as any traditional funeral, and every family is kept fully informed throughout the process.
Direct cremation also allows families the freedom to remember their loved one in their own way, at a time and place that feels right for them.
Our approach to direct cremation
Most of our direct cremations take place at Manchester Crematorium, a well-established and respected crematorium serving families across Greater Manchester.
We work closely with the crematorium team to ensure every direct cremation is carried out quietly, respectfully, and with care. From arrival at the crematorium to placing your loved one onto the catafalque, our team treats every moment with dignity and professionalism.
Although direct cremation does not include an attended service, your loved one is never treated as just a process. Every cremation is approached with the same respect we would give to our own family.
Where required, an alternative crematorium may be used depending on availability, but our standards of care remain the same at all times.
Thoughtful support, without pressure
While direct cremation is intentionally simple, we recognise that families may still wish for personal involvement.
Where appropriate, we can offer:
-
guidance on clothing choices for your loved one
-
the opportunity for private chapel visits prior to cremation
-
advice on memorial options and ashes caskets following the cremation
Our role is to support families gently, without pressure or unnecessary decisions.
Local care across Greater Manchester & Stockport
With branches serving Manchester and Stockport, including Reddish, we support families throughout Greater Manchester, regardless of postcode.
We regularly care for families in areas such as Gorton, Openshaw, Clayton, Beswick, Levenshulme, Longsight, Droylsden, Heaton Chapel, Brinnington, and Denton, as well as surrounding districts — but our services are not limited to these areas.
Arrangements can be made simply over the phone or online, allowing us to support families across the region with the same high standard of care.
Here when you need us
Arranging a direct cremation can feel overwhelming, especially during a time of loss. Our role is to make the process clear, calm, and supportive, without judgement or pressure.
If you have questions or would like to arrange a direct cremation, please contact Mulligans Direct Cremation. We are here to help.
